The Medieval touches — the jousting, hand-spun pottery, drinking horns and other period language and dress — will still be there. But this year’s King Richard’s Faire, which takes place in Carver, will include a very modern competition — Renaissance Idol, a singing contest modeled after the Fox hit show.

“We wanted to do something new this year to showcase the impressive bed of talent that visits King Richard’s Faire,” said fair producer Bonnie Shapiro.
The fair is holding the Renaissance Idol competition for the first time. Contestants will be judged on singing ability, of course, but also costume and “flair,” essentially wearing period clothing.

The initial rounds are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 6, and Saturday, Sept. 20. The final round is Saturday, Sept. 27. Another competition — the prince and princess contest for “the most authentically dressed royal duo” for those under 12 — will coincide with the Idol finals. Renaissance Idol hopefuls must perform solo, be at least 16, and provide the name of their song when they sign up. Contestants can sign up in advance by calling 508-866-5391.

Adults can compete in other areas, too. A bustier cleavage contest — “those willing to bare their plunging necklines to the king” — is Saturday, Sept. 13, and a tattoo contest is Saturday, Oct. 4. The Idol competition is expected to be among the most popular shows, along with the cleavage contest, jousting, a liger show, featuring one of the world’s largest cats, and a torture show. The torture show, by the group American Madmen, features gross-out acts like staples to the forehead, a mouse trap to the tongue, or hanging hooks from eyelids. It might not be for those with weak stomachs.

This year is the 27th for the fair, held in rural Carver off the main north-south thoroughfare, Route 58. The 80-acre fairground includes a zoo, a tournament field for jousts, stages for jugglers, singers and dancers, and shops for more than 100 artisans. The fair, a re-creation of a 16th century English marketplace, runs for eight weekends through Oct. 19. Depending on weather, it can draw 100,000 to 150,000 visitors each year.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $14 for children up to age 12, and free for children under 5. Parking is free, and special rates are available for groups of 25 or more. It is open every Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is open Columbus Day.

I wanted to let you know of a lecture going on in Fresno, that I think
would be of interest to Elizabethan costumers. As part of the Fresno
Fiberarts Guild, their first workshop of the season is called
“Gemstone Applications in Elizabethan Times” presented by Kyle Marie
Laird.

“Kyle will discuss once fashionable Old World gemstone embellishments
and explain their applications as surface design decoration on period
garments of the Elizabethan era.”

My newsletter describes further that “(her) lecture will explain how
Queen Elizabeth dressed to display power. Kyle is in the process of
replicating one of Elizabeth’s gowns, and she will show us what she
has completed.”

You do not have to be a FFG member to attend the lecture, but they do
request a $10.00 fee for non-members.

This will be on Saturday September 20, at approximately 10:00am, after
their business meeting and social break which can vary. If you want to
attend the full morning meeting, they start promptly at 9:00am. It
usually ends at noon or so.

They meet at the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Service Center, near Fresno
& Barstow Ave. 5340 North Fresno St.

Map can be found here:
http://www.fresnofiberartsguild.org/meetings.htm

I hope to see some of you there.

Greetings everyone!
With just over 60 days until our 2008 Grand Opening things are
looking great at the Louisiana Renaissance Festival! Here are some
highlights and new information for everyone!

1. Our Girl Scout Theater workshop will be held at the Renaissance
Festival Site on Saturday September 13th from 10am to 5pm. We will
have activities for Junior and Brownie scouts that will fulfill most
of the requirements for the Theater Badge for Juniors and
several “Try-It’s” for Brownies. We are inviting Girl Scouts and
Brownies to join our cast members at our workshop where we will cover
most of the items needed for the “Theater” badge and several “Try-
Its”. Our cast specializes in “Improv”, which is acting without a
script and receives more than 50 hours of training each year, and
perform each year during our show for more than 100 hours. Advance
registration is required for this workshop. For more information
visit:
http://www.larf.org/girlscouts
2. We have several special events that will take place this fall
during the Renaissance Festival during the festival day that I want to
remind you about.
The first special event is our Birthday Party, which is available two
times a day. Parties are available for both Adults and Children. For
children, Whether Princess, Knight, or Pirate, you and your friends
can undertake a quest of exploration, adventure, and knowledge with
the colorful residents of the Village of Albright. Your princess and
her entourage will learn everything they need to know to be a true
royal from the proper way to curtsy to the joyous fun of courtly
dancing. Training for knighthood is a must for young lords seeking
adventure. They must gain knowledge and learn skills necessary to be
a noble Knight of Albright. The pirate life can be a rewarding one
for those willing to seek Spanish gold for her Majesty. All of our
noble lords and ladies and even our pirate friends will end their day
with an audience with Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth where they
will be rewarded with an invitation to join the court as a princess,
knight, or privateer for Albright. For additional information visit:
http://www.larf.org/parties.asp
The second special event is our Wine or Whisky tasting event. Our
Wine tasting will lead novice tasters and experienced connoisseurs
through a tasting of 8 premium wines, accompanied by fruit, cheese
and bread. New this year is the addition of Whisky tasting as our
guests explore the tastes of the “Water of Life.” featuring three
Scotch whiskies and one Irish whiskey. For additional information
visit:
http://www.larf.org/festival/winetasting.asp
The third special event is our Wedding packages. This year’s dates are November 11th, 12th and
13th from am to 2pm. This year we will also be offering a fund
raising opportunity to schools that join us. For more nformation on
our Student Day program visit:
http://www.studentday.net
We have added a new feature to our program this year that gives
schools the chance to raise funds for their school! We will provide
all schools that participate in our Student Day program coupons that
can be handed out to family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Foundation is a non-profit organization established to promote and maintain the health and medical well-being of the participants of Renaissance Faires, historical performances and other artistic events through financial assistance, education, advocacy and preventative programs.”

RESCU is five years old this year, and now has a presence on both myspace and facebook. I even just found out that there’s a web search engine—www.goodsearch.com—where money from Yahoo advertisers goes to the RESCU foundation without the user having to spend a dime! It’s a remarkable organization born out of the need for a community to help its own. And at almost every Renaissance faire, everywhere, at some point during the run of faire, there’s a Saturday night rally, with raffles and silent auctions and live auctions, all for the purpose of raising money for the foundation. One of the food merchants donates a spaghetti dinner and the five dollar donations go straight to RESCU. Anyone can donate stuff or money; anyone can buy raffle tickets, anyone can volunteer to help with the event; one massage therapist even set up a table during the rally and donated the money folks paid for their massages! East Wind Games and Pendragon Costumes both usually donate product, as do dozens of other merchants. It’s a great cause, and the rally is a great party! Sunday morning we learned the rally earned over $15,000 for the foundation!

I snapped this photo from my roof, which overlooks the Pig and Whistle Pub, where the rally is held, after I’d given in to being tired, and the rally was winding down. Imagine this same space, only with elbow to elbow people, laughing, drinking, eating, shouting, bidding on stuff, and just generally enjoying life!

This is an update on the Cow Palace, home of the annual Dickens Christmas Faire in San Francisco.

Updated information from Kevin. Please contact him with any questions
at kevin@savethecowpalace.com
Senator Yee got an amended version of his bill passed by the Assembly
55-14 late last week. This version calls for the sale of the 13
acres, rather than it’s lease.
Here’s the SFGate article link
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/08/22/BAT012GUHQ.DTL

The next important step is to call, write, fax and communicate your
views to Governor Schwarzenegger. Ask your friends who care about the
Cow Palace to do the same (numbers below).

The bill remains an unnecessary and costly exercise. The 13 acres is
already in the process of being long term leased for a grocery store,
etc. and a lease is clearly better than an outright sale of State land.
Proceeds from either a sale or a lease will go to revitalize the Cow
Palace which has been the plan of the Cow Palace Board of Directors
from the start. However, Senator Yee never mentions this. He
continues to hammer away with his negative rhetoric about the Cow
Palace as if his goal is still to tear it down.

The bill must be vetoed by the Governor. This will allow the Lease
to continue, the grocery store and retail center to get built faster,
and maximize income to the Cow Palace for it’s revitalization process.
My personal belief is that Senator Yee wants to demolish the Cow
Palace and the 13 acres “sale” is Step 1. Daly City will stand to
gain from increased taxes if the Cow Palace is demolished and
replaced with condo’s and Yee’s 5-year plan is clearly to make this
happen. We can and must stop him now.

Once the bill is defeated, and the 13 acres is properly leased, and a
lovely new retail center is built, the Cow Palace can begin it’s
revitalization process and prove to Daly City and Senator Yee that
the larger interests of the Bay Area and California are best served
by a revitalized and dynamic new Cow Palace.

Thanks so much for all your help in saving the Cow Palace,

Kevin Patterson

Here is the suggested text for your faxes and the Governor’s contact
information:

August 26, 2008
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814
Phone: 916-445-2841
Fax: 916-558-3160
Re: Vetoing SB1527 is smart business

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

I want the Cow Palace to be revitalized and continue to serve
Californian’s for another 60 years. I know there is zero money in
the State coffers to pay for this. Therefore, I want you to veto
SB1527. This bill is a bad deal for California. Here’s why:
The Cow Palace Board of Directors has a plan in process to self-fund
both its operating costs and it’s revitalization. The Board has
chosen a developer to long-term lease 13 acres of Cow Palace property
and build a needed retail center for local residents. Income from
this lease will grow over the next 50 years and will pay for upgrades
to the facility and operations.

SB1527 forces a sale of the 13 acres of Cow Palace property. The
sale price, especially in the current real estate market, will be a
sweetheart deal for Daly City who holds a first right of refusal on
the purchase. This is short sighted and will only benefit Daly
City’s developer friends. The Daly City tax base increases with
either a sale or a lease.

A lease is also better for the local community. The future
revitalization of the local community is tied to the fate of the Cow
Palace. With over 600,000 people attending Cow Palace events last
year, and the potential of significantly increased numbers after it’s
revitalization, the viability of the proposed retail center, not to
mention existing businesses, is certainly tied to the ongoing success
of the Cow Palace.

Financially speaking, a lease will generate at least twice the annual
cash flow than proceeds invested from a sale. The State would also
retain a very valuable asset. The 13 acres is worth approximately
$17 million today, (based on a Cushman Wakefield appraisal), but it
could be worth nearly $100 million at the end of a 50 year lease.
Please support this plan by vetoing SB1527.

Signed,

<Your name & city here>
